Turkish Women Affairs Minister addresses Family Summit in Istanbul
Turkish State Minister for Women and Family Selma Aliye Kavaf participated Friday in the World Family Summit 5 meeting in Istanbul. Delivering a speech at the summit, Kavaf said governments should prioritize raising the educational level of women, preventing abuse, and securing a more active participation of women in politics. "Women's contributions to social and economic life is the basis for a democratic and strong society and it is important to create a world where men and women are together represented equally in order to strengthen the society. Removing women's problems regarding human rights is a fundamental requirement for democracy, peace and tolerance to prevail," Kavaf said. Kavaf also met with Deisi Noeli, president of the World Family Organization, before the summit meeting. The World Family Summit 5, encompassing with the decision of the UN ECOSOC to work for the year 2010, the current global and national trends and challenges and their impacts on gender equality and empowerment of women, is set to discuss how countries, governments, politicians, judicial systems and civil society are approaching the issue.
